ROME - Castelli Romani - Travel Journal - Part 4
Rome is quite an incredible spot compared to other capitals, not only for its history, but also its geographical positioning : You are more or less 30 km from the sea and 90 km to reach the Mount Termillo if you love skying and are looking for snow. In addition to this Rome is at few kilometers from amazing spots, that we call '“I Castelli Romani” (trad. “The Roman Castles) full of history, located on dead volcanos that today welcomes lovely lakes. You might have heard about Castel Gandolfo, which occupies a height on the Alban Hills overlooking Lake Albano. Castel Gandolfo has several places of archaeological interest including the Emissario del Lago Albano and the remains of the Villa of Domitian.
The Castelli Romani counts several small towns, and one I wanted Vincent to visit was Nemi and its lake. Nemi is called the '“city of strawberries”. No matter what time of the year you’ll visit… you will have strawberries. This is mainly because of the very special climate there. There is an incredible view from there: the lake, than the capital, and during sunny days, you see the Mediterranean sea. A special alcohol is made there as well, one of my favorite, called “Fragolino”, based on straberries of course. There you find as well typical food of the region…
Well known by the Romans, who sometimes go and visit the Fraschetterie ( the most famous are those located at Ariccia) , very simple and not fancy restaurants specialized in dried meat, salami and porchetta (roasted pork), it can be a very good spot if you are looking for something less touristy, good food and lovely views.
